The Suffolk village of Rumburgh, close to Horning and Halesworth, is situated north of Norwich. At one point in its history Rumburgh Priory was a prominent landmark, but this has now become its church. In the middle of the 19th century the village held its own race meeting on Tuesday 9th April 1844. The contest was over a 3 ½ mile course starting in pastures opposite The Bulk, extending to the Common on which there were 50 leaps, and then running on to the finishing flag at the Inn. The Match was between Mr Glasspoole’s Pirate ridden by Hindes, and Mr Oswald’s Yellow Dwarf ridden by England, with both horses carrying 12 stone. It proved to be a one-sided affair with Pirate winning by an easy 30 yards. |
